Duluth Folk School - Catching Memories: Creating Travel Journals

Registration fee: $88

Register at Duluth Folk School

In this class you will get started on your own travel journal for a past trip and create a blank one to take on the next one!

As part of your class fee you will receive – supplies to make two A6/pocket notebooks, a sample pack of pens, a double-sided tape runner, and a few travel themed stickers and washi tape ($30 value).

Taking an exciting trip can make it go by in a flash. At the end of a trip you end up with a little collection of brochures, postcards, ticket stubs, stickers, and other interesting papers.

Oftentimes, these ephemeral objects disappear into the recycling bin or tucked away in a box to be looked at “someday”. If you are anything like me, I take so long to revisit these mementos that I have forgotten why I kept them in the first place or the moments they represent. That’s where the travel journal comes in.

What is a travel journal? A travel journal is a combination of a trip diary and a scrapbook. While any notebook can be used, a smaller notebook that can be easily carried in a daypack or pocket is usually best. Basically, make it so it is easy to tuck away little memories on the go.

Bring papers, photos, old tickets, brochures, maps, etc. Anything that is flat is eligible (although be careful with food wrappers, they need to be clean).

Introduction to the Modern Fountain Pen Hobby

While we mainly consider fountain pens to be something that went out of fashion decades ago (when the ballpoint pen took over as the reigning writing instrument), they did not in fact disappear. In this class you will learn all about how they are not only still manufactured, but are the center of a thriving community of hobbyists. Come and learn about the new (and some old!) players in the fountain pen industry and how you can add these beautiful pens to your own life!
